Back to the project

These works were presented in the exhibition with Ulla Hahn at Galerie Vincenz Sala, Berlin, in 2022 under the title “Lasso of Truth“.

The quick appropriations of Warhol’s Marylins (2022), playfully bring the flat silkscreens created by mechanical means back into painting, reconnecting to formal questions raised in art history and taking up the challenge of how it is possible at all to paint appropriations of flat surfaces.

The now variously painted model image of Marylin point to the diversity and uniqueness of the individual women’s faces from which she was inspired. The foreknowledge of the famous model leads to the automatic comparison of the painted images, pointing to the way one looks at images in the first place by comparing them. This led to the Spot-the-Difference paintings (2022) inviting the viewer to compare the hand-painted copies of Spot-the Difference prints. The search for differences provokes an irritation by the fact that the hand-painting inevitably produces slight differences between the appropriated motives.

The Quick Marylins were arranged in the exhibition at Vincenz Sala in exactly the same way as their 10 originals at MOMA in New York.
